Night was over the pier on the edge of Brooklyn, known as Navy Yard, just facing the long island that is Manhattan. As always, the dark shade in the sky was the perfect time to perform illegal activities, like sneaking in drugs from a shipment not scheduled in any business. There's a lot of cash you can make when selling drugs on the street. A rather smooth and shady scheme...
...except something or someone were giving the armed thugs huge anxiety.
Everything was going peaceful, as some thugs were carrying shipment of drugs out of a ship and into a truck...until in a blink of an eye, one of them was pulled into the darkness inside a large crate. Before other thugs could hesitantly check what was going on, something destroyed the lights...
...a bat-shaped...throwing weapons or something.
Things became serious and rather frightening, for when someone turns away, one of their elk vanishes, barely making a scream. It was like there was some sort of ghost from a horror movie taking away people and leaving their dead bodies elsewhere. Well the remaining thugs found one body. Though alive...
...he was hanging from a crane, tied up in rope.
The thugs then figured out a pattern. Whoever was taking out their men was going after the armed ones. Though still standing didn't have guns. Maybe knives...
...and that meant they were vulnerable from a purple blur that appeared out of nowhere as it attacked them with unforgiving blows. This monster was too fast for them to see, it was like they were being striked by more than one. Screams of pain howled before it was silenced by a boot to the face...
...and the unconscious bodies were left in the pier, as a person in a black cape walked off before police sirens neared the pier.
Red and blue lights flashed outside the pier as the police gathered the out-cold crooks for the paramedics. Standing on a warehouse nearby, the vigilante's cape bellowed in the wind before turning away and heading off from the scene, making a leap off the short roof...
...and driving off in a moped.
The infamous Batgirl had her little fun taking down a drug traffic, but that didn't get her anywhere near solving the mystery of where is she. This is New York, but some of the city felt wrong. And she's not getting and return calls from Kara or Donna (the latter barely knows how a phone works, but at least she can pick up a phone). And as much as she hate to check, she's not getting any signal from the Batcave. It's official, she's in an alternate dimension, thanks to that pink wave. Strange that her apartment is around, as well as the abandoned building where she keeps her gear.
And sadly, the Burito Bucket, a fast food place she loves and hates is also here...unless it's a universal thing, but she's employed there, so it's safe to assume its from her world. She loves burritos, but hates having to work there. What she wouldn't give to work in a job fitting for a superhero, like a journalist, like Kara's cousin.
Kaine had suffered a severe blow on being a superhero recently he had his doubts. After recovering from a severe fight against the Wolf Spider a week had passed since his injuries had healed. There was a lot of self-doubt in the spider as he had no idea what he was doing. As he kept looking for shards, he had promised Madame Webb. If he had gone back to his dimension, he had no idea how he might have handled this. He would have been able to do fine. Kaine had heard of some type of business going on down at the docks. At least check it out. He had recovered from the injuries that the Wolf Spider had given him. His near-death experience bothered him this time.
Kaine had managed to make some sort of companionship towards Otto Doc Ock where he had been taken in. He web-slinging his way over to where the docks were (Not near Otto’s lab) As he began to search the grounds. He found a couple of piles of bodies, that were unconscious as he was on one of the nearby warehouses. “Hey, someone has already been here. But who?” Kaine asked as he looked around.
The clone quickly got out of there as he saw that the men were coming over by the police, as he saw the flashing lights. He was not about to answer ten thousand questions, nor had he been a part of this. He quickly disappeared off the warehouse roof before backing into the alleyways. Long gone before the police came. He was grateful that he had learned how to be so stealth around the others. He maneuvered without being seen many times rather successfully, even if he did have a damaged eye.
As Kaine jumped from building to building, that was when he noticed that someone had passed him. Well, he had no idea who it was, just a shadow of a person along with some kind of cape? At first, he was going to assume it was Batman. It looked an awful lot like him. “Hey, Batman, is that you? What are you doing outside of Gotham?” He asked.
There was no response as he heard them drive off on a motorcycle using his web-slinging Kaine was a bit behind her before catching up. This was not Batman at all, but it heavily disappointed him. He had met another Batman at least twice now, and the guy seemed to be rather intimidating. “Hey, wait!” Kaine asked as he jumped onto one of the nearby buses as they were starting to slow down. They were going to a burrito fast food place. Kaine did have a little bit of money on him, and it was not close to dinner time, so he was not hungry. He should be chasing shards, but instead, he was chasing caped hero wannabes.
“Hey, slow down! I just want to – talk! Urk!” He was about to ask as he felt the bus come to a stop. As he felt his body starting to slip off the bus, as it came to a sudden halt, Otto would have been extremely mad at him, if he damaged himself again from those injuries he had just recovered from. He quickly grabbed onto one of the nearby buildings to avoid face planting into the pavement. He stood on the brick side of the wall before managing to climb onto the side rather quickly.
Finally, Kaine had caught up to the caped woman. “Were you just at the docks earlier?” Kaine asked as he now wore regular clothing seeing the woman driving up. “I was just there, and I thought I saw you. And not a fan, either. But your costume looks very similar to Batman's.” The clone said. He had been still wearing his Scarlet Spider suit as he knew if he took it off, the other humans might be afraid of his scarred-up face and probably run the other direction.
Her phone was attached to a slot under the speedmonitor between the steering handles, allowing her to use it while driving, like its GPS. She's still not fully familiar with all of New York City, after all. Though she spends her nights taking down criminals, she also been going around buildings with large antennas to hack into them, so she can use as many as she can to scan the city, from her computers, to figure out what could be the source of dimensional tears that took her to this alternate Earth. Heck, that even took other cities to this place, like Metropolis and Gotham. She hasn't been to any of them yet, for she doesn't have the money for even Metropilis. Gotham is closer, like in New Jersey, but still a bit expensive to get there.
"Hm?" She thought she heard someone call her, but with the sounds of vehicles in the road, racing by or past her, and honking endlessly, she couldn't make it out. She shrugged, probably was just nothing...
...until he she startled when she saw some fully costumed man running beside her moped, and she was driving faster than most of the traffic, easily maneuvering between them. Clearly, this guy is a meta, but she can't hear him through the loud motors of her bike and all the honking around.
Sighing, she drove onto a sidewalk, parking there before turning off the engine. She removed her bat-helmet, glancing at the meta with a slight frown, for he kinda scared her. "Uhh...something the matter, uh...?"
She had done some research while she was here, trying to get the lo-down on the heroes and villains of this world and city...and the most notable one she came across was a certain spider hero. "Aren't you Spider-Man?" Who...could've redesigned his costume. It always happens.
Nobody had any idea how it aggravated Kaine so much, that he had been confused for Spider-Man. Yes, he might’ve had the same DNA, same fingerprints, same look alike because he was a clone. But the obvious was there on his costume that he looked different than Peter. “Spider-Man? No. I’m his brother. It’s complicated.” He said. He shook his head. “I’m Scarlet Spider.” He said with a frown under his mask. To turn the tables, “I saw you at the docks, the cape anyways. I thought you were Batman at first.” He pointed out as he had met another version of Batman at least once now on a trip to Gotham. Kaine stood perched on the side of the wall willing to talk. He wasn't going anywhere, as he was curious about this person. Not going to attack her or anything that wasn't something he was interested in today.
It was true, that the city noise was rather loud there were always busy cars going through. Kaine had only ever grown up in the city, in the lab down below, in his dimension, so he was used to the noise. He half wondered if he was going to get along with this girl. She looked like a teenager. Just like with Peter, he had gotten in an argument with him, and it didn’t end well at all. He figured the same might happen here. Or she might run away from him. Kaine was pretty used to that, and by now, his face alone would scare him.
“Wait! I just want to talk, I'm not armed or anything. I saw you at the docks, and earlier I know this was weird. You didn’t leave a single person unconscious, so you must be good.” Kaine observed. “A good mentor, no doubt.”
“I was in the area looking for shards and came home empty-handed,” Kaine explained as he knew that was one of his latest tasks on trying to find them. He knew that they were going to be trying to find them. They were going to be hard, and Kaine knew that for sure they weren’t going to be easy. He had already found a shard after traveling through the Savage Lands Jungle with Otto, and he was wondering when the next one might show up. It was only a matter of time. But first, he wanted to know who this similarly copied person was who resembled Batman. He remembered his encounter with Batman too that had been an odd one. The guy was very serious and very intimidating. The guy stalked things like the night. Scarlet Spider's own black and red costume stood out even more compared to Batman's. He knew why some people regarded him as a hero. As for Kaine he had no idea what he was. Probably the worst hero ever.
“I guess I was curious, are you by chance related to Batman or affiliated with him? The costume looks close to it. I met one while I took two trips to Gotham a while ago. He was very serious, and intimidating.” Kaine asked as he figured he better get the truth out. He had been tailing this girl he hadn’t web-slinged there all for nothing.
Kaine wasn't even sure if it was a good idea teaming up with someone he barely knew. He might as well keep his guard up and keep an eye on things. If she could beat up other bad guys like that, then he better keep his own guard up. Yes, Kaine could defend himself in a fight. But he knew allying himself with others was a good option too. He just had to wait and see as for now he had to make some debate later on with this girl. They did have something in common they had met a Batman at some point in their lives.
So her research didn't tell her about another Spider-Man...another version, like maybe with Batwoman to Batman, or even the Green Lanterns. That didn't matter, because two things he said caught her interest. One were these...shards. Gonna need to elaborate on that, maybe they could be related to this dimensional patchwork issue. And two, there's a Batman here after all...or was one. She didn't read up any recent Batman sightings. Only ones that are a couple months old. No way he or any Batmans would just hide for months. It could be something to do with a theory she has.
"No, I'm not Batman, but I used to work for him. I'm Batgirl. I just took down a drug smuggling operation, but I'm mostly trying to figure out what the heck is pulling people from different realities to this patchwork one." She probably shouldn't tell him that much info, but he seems nice enough. She doesn't have much leads, so she might need some help solving this case. "Uh, what about these shards, you said?"

“There have been a handful of spider-powered people popping up here, I just happen to be the one related to Spider-Man. We have a love-hate relationship now, I guess… It’s a long story.” Kaine said. However, there was a little bit of animosity, in his voice and dislike for his template. He knew he would have to move past that eventually. He was not even sure if it was a good idea to tell her that she was his clone. It was enough to shock several people. When the time was right or if he learned to trust her enough, he would tell her. But since this was their first meeting things, seemed to be going semi ok. He also understood that she had some cautious looks towards him too.
“I do not know much about them myself. They seem to have some unusual power and have been a little bit responsible in opening up things like portals, giving people different powers… Falling into the wrong hands, I fear what may happen to them.” Kaine said as he looked overseeing the woman. He had been right that she had worked under him just by the looks of the costume they made it clear. Though she wasn't that far off on him. Kaine had been Spider-Man's clone from a different dimension. He knew one of these days he would have to break free from his brother's shadow.
“I see, so I was correct.” The clone said before offering an invitation towards Batgirl. “If you want, we can go looking for them later. I see you are busy; I have been searching for shards for someone else. Or if you have the time, now. I guess I was impressed that you beat them up earlier at the docks, and I came too late.” Kaine explained. Though he would not have minded knocking a couple of heads together. "Unfortunately, I do not know much about the portals part. I would be satisfied to go home. However, I have been stuck here for a while now." Kaine admitted.
“Did you by chance fall through a portal? There seems to be more and more of that coming as of late. No one I have met has been to this world or has lived in it their whole life.” Kaine asked. He wondered with all these new superheroes and villains, though Kaine was more of a loner preferring things to do in his ways. It would not hurt to make an ally or two with others. It might help out. But he could understand if she said no. He was a total stranger to her as well as she was to him.
"It was more like a wave than a portal, but yes. But it didn't just send me, but a bit of my...personal life with me." Like her secret workshop, her apartment, but no one living there, not even her roommates for the time being. Heck, she's still going to college, but a ESU replaced NYU. Not like she'll tell him that, for secret identities are like that. "I been trying to triangulate their source, but I haven't been successful yet. They're hard to get a lock on, especially when you don't know when and where they'll appear."
Taking her phone out of her bike, "But if these shards are related, then they might help me remedy that. I can track one, but I would need a sample of these shards, if you have one." Sure, she doesn't have the best and most high-tech computers around, but she's been with Batman long enough to learn about his Batcomputers. And with her high knowledge on hacking and computers, she was able to improvise with what she has to make gear and systems close to the actual thing. She might be able to learn that if there are those who been to this world but randomly vanish; hopefully back to their world. If so, then Barbara awaits her turn, before her father freaks out if he finds out she's gone.
“I see we had a similar fate. I wound up here but just by myself over a year ago.” Kaine said as he had to learn how to navigate this new world. He did have his crummy three-room apartment where he could rest. Kaine, however, had never even gone to school as his creator had just the home-schooling, and Peter Parker’s memories, from his template. Kaine was certain that he might be as intelligent as his template. He probably would be able to do fine in school on his own, but of course, the problem was money and lack of funding. Usually, he helped catch wanted simple villains off the streets. Usually, pretty easy jobs were worth some money, and that was enough to keep him going for now. Kaine heard Batgirl speak up about needing a sample. He appeared to be a little bit reluctant at first. However, Kaine thought it was a better idea just to let her know then. He took his backpack that had been slung over his shoulder and opened it.
“I do have one… I can let you borrow it. I have one condition, I would like it back. You don’t know what an ordeal I had I went through to get it.” Kaine said as he took his backpack out as shuffled through it. It wasn’t long before he found the blue shard that had been a space shard. Kaine had found the shard that brought him to the jungle. He just hoped that she would comply and not steal it off of him. There were plenty of shards, to go around that hadn't been found just yet. Kaine would’ve more than happy to chuck it into the water by the Brooklyn Bridge, but he felt like it was probably better than to hang on to it instead.
“Here, you may borrow it.” He said after jumping down off of the building as he handed it over to Batgirl to take a reading off of it. “It’s a space shard, and it teleported me to a jungle. Just be careful with it, and that does not happen to you.” Kaine explained. “So, how are you going to track it? If you do not mind me asking? I didn't even know that was possible.” He added as the spider was remotely curious. Who could blame him for being curious? Perhaps the energy source was enough to lock onto and something that they could look for. As it must have had a very unique energy signature. “The obvious being energy coming off of it probably has a unique signature.” Kaine gave Bat Girl her space to work as he took a couple of steps back. The sounds of New York City were around him as the traffic went past them. They were something he was used to as the traffic he had heard since he had been created had never gone away. All Kaine could do now was wait.
This shard...it looks a little like the Sunstones of Superman's Fortress of Solitude Kara once shown her. They are adaptable minerals from Kryton that...well, if you knew how, they can do anything you desire them to; vehicles, computers, sources of energy. Anything. And that kind of power could bring Earth to ruin, not that Lex Luthor cares.
"It's fine. I just need to scan it." Holding her phone over the shard, it beamed red laser light over it. A loading bar filled up, accessing what says 'Batgirl main computers', which it was loading the data there. "Jeez...!" The phone shown numerous bar readings that were dancing like crazy. This shard is just brimming with cosmic energy, nothing like the Sunstones. This 'Space Shard' lives up to its name, for it was bending reality around it, but its faint and subtle. "I'm guessing this is only one piece of its full shape. Yeah, I hate to see what kind of power this thing has over reality if it's put together with the others."
And she hates to think if Lex Luthor was here in this world, too, and knew about it. He'll be after the shards faster than a speeding bullet. Or worse...if the Joker went to look for them. It'll be literal chaos for everyone.
Then her phone displayed a GPS map of Brooklyn, and a radar pulse. "But unfortunately, my radar can't pinpoint any others, but it's detecting something. We're going to be play 'Hot-cold' here."
Scarlet Spider had to agree with Batgirl on that one. He was afraid of what power might come from a fully formed shard. He did not want to find out. “I am afraid to find out. If it could teleport me back and forth like that… Who knows what it could do when it's fully formed. Probably send us to space or another dimension.” Kaine said as he waited patiently for the scan to begin. She sounded pretty surprised, and who could blame her? There were probably shards all over the place as they try to find them, and have to locate at least one. Who was to say that the hot spots were fakes or even false alarms? That was more than likely the case.
“Uh? Is everything alright?” Kaine asked, a little bit surprised. He was worried at first something bad had happened the way she exclaimed like that. But it had been more for the energy amount. He didn’t need a spidey sense to know that was some form of surprise from Batgirl. The energy giving off of the shard alone was something to be leery about. “Yes, the shard’s energy is extremely powerful, and I didn’t even need a spidey sense to tell me that part. The energy alone can let your hair stand up.” Kaine had hoped that they might be able to find one or two more. And it sounds like coming out all this way had been worth it after all. Now, if they could only locate them.
“Hm, we can try the closest one that is on your scanner. Somehow I have a feeling we will be out here for a while trying to locate it.” Kaine said. Yes, he did have time on his hands as he would be willing to track them down. But even the clone needed a break every once in a while. However, he had a job to do and find the shards. “And the next one is nearby, hopefully? I don’t want to play, find a shard in a needle in a haystack, so to speak. Is the shard nearby? I mean nearby, like the next few city blocks, nearby. Not on the other side of the city where I might have to take a bus.” Kaine said wondering what was going to happen. He knew he had to be careful and keep his guard up as he hoped Batgirl was going to be in for a whole lot too. They were going to have something powerful and chaotic on their hands. If they weren’t on guard, they might be doomed to be sucked into another dimension.
If she had better equipment, she could pinpoint where the next shard is. Playing 'Hot/Cold' is going to be a little time consuming, especially if there's any electronics that could disrupt her scanners. "Yeah, few blocks north from us. Let's hurry before it attracts the wrong kind of attention."
Hopping back on her bike, she slot her phone back in its compartment before she revved the throttle and drove back on the road, maneuvering the crazy traffic that almost hit her, and honked at her, angrily. Frankly, she don't care, for this line of work, you don't have time to apologize for people's crazy driving. It's pretty much the same as Gotham, only this city is a little tamer when it comes to driving. People there are so on the edge, and when it comes to crazy and dangerous criminals and villains, who can blame them?
The radar pulse, on her GPS was turning redder, slowly pointing to her left, meaning it might be around the pier. She made a sharp turn into an alleyway, heading for said docks.

They were going back to the docks. “I will meet you at the docks. I can web sling there,” Kaine said with a nod of approval. He saw Batgirl take off, and he followed. He began to send up a web-slinging line with a familiar thwip noise as it came out of his wrist. He felt the rush on as he quickly hurried on after her through the city. By now, Kaine knew how to get to the docks as he had been there plenty of times with finding Otto’s base, and he had no intention of bringing another hero as it was a ‘secret lab.’ He was climbing higher, and higher as he got to a point where the motion would carry him along. It had taken years for Kaine to master the art of web-slinging, and crashing into buildings was common....if it weren't for his durability he might be dead.
It did not take long before he arrived at the supposed spot. The docks were quiet as the police activity had faded after picking up the drug dealers from earlier. He landed on one of the nearby warehouse buildings as he began to climb down on what looked like a couple of storage bins. He also remembered the last time he was here Kaine had an unfortunate meeting with Otto. However, needless to say, they put their differences aside to work with each other taking a couple of bad guys out. The docks were also where he fell through the portal… They were such great memories. “I have arrived at the docks. Come think of it. This is not far from where I fell through a portal believe it or not. I woke up on the docks completely confused… This was not my New York, but one similar to it.” Kaine said. He almost lost his lunch because the ride had been so bumpy and uncomfortable. Like most dimensional travelers, Kaine had a desire to go home. But this new dimension was starting to grow on him, no doubt. The water was calm that afternoon with the occasional sounds of gulls that had been resting on the shore or on nearby piers.
“Now where do you suppose the shard would be? I suppose if there is enough to go around, we can keep both.” Kaine asked as he was willing to share it. The spider was still learning how to work with others. As he still preferred to do things alone. It had been a long-time habit. He used his one good eye to look around so far, and nothing stood out. No glowing objects, as it refused to make itself known, but he hoped Batgirl’s scanning techniques would help them out.
Stopping her bike in a dark alleyway, she parked it there, and flipped off out of the alley, with her phone in hand. "So did you? I wonder if shards are or were around areas rifts were last seen." Checking her phone, the pulse on the radar beat a step more. "I don't know, but we're a bit close."
Looking ahead, just nothing but warehouses on her right, some look abandoned; perfect for criminals to hide in. Frankly, she don't see why they're so perfect, as they're the obvious hiding spots for crooks. But then again, there are so many of them, and it's so stupid to hide in them that not many would think a crook would be at.
But there was one building that was out of place from them; an Oscorp lab building, probably a facility for the main one to get their supplies. Oscorp has a bit of a dubious reputation, as they have been suspected of being involved in numerous criminal activities. But of course, they hadn't been proven yet.Anyways, as she walked down the pier, the pulsing was slowing getting stronger.
"Oh great. I hope the shard isn't in there," she groaned. Last thing she needs is to break into a private building, and then being chased by the cops.
Kaine looked overseeing that Batgirl was on the move as he knew best to follow, as he jumped down onto the ground. His guard was up, so he might as well make use of his spidey sense. He followed her short few paces behind her, as he knew they would try to, get something done here. Looking for the shard shouldn’t be too hard. “Yeah, that would make sense. I got lost and confused here for a while. I slept the first few nights on the streets before finding enough money to buy a small apartment. Those nights weren’t fun.” Kaine said knowing those days hadn’t been fun. He was doing a bit better from when he had started.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if the shards are the things that are pulling us here, and we might as well guess that for that one teleporting me to the jungle,” Kaine said with a soft nod.
Kaine sighed, “Oscorp, of all places? If it’s like the building in my dimension, it will have armed guards. Who knows what else, and we will not be able to slip in that easily and out.” Kaine said knowing that they were going to need a stealth mode in it, they were not going to be easily walk in and out without them noticing it. And he was also aware that their costumes were going to be even more troubling for them to get in. They could use stealth, but how long could they keep it up before they got noticed by the guards and other members that worked there. “We could use stealth to get in or any vents on the building. I’ve done that before.” Kaine suggested. “I don’t want to be blown up just trying to retrieve something that they don’t own,” Kaine said with a sigh.
“I think I see the shard, my vision isn’t very good, but it’s hard to miss the glow up there on the roof,” Kaine observed, and he was pointing a finger out there as that alone wasn’t going to be easy to get too. “And I don’t have a plan, but being blasted to bits isn’t one of them.” The spider admitted.
